Your garage door is made up of many moving parts

The best place to start learning garage door anatomy is the garage door itself. While you may think it’s simple, there are more breakable parts of your garage door than you think. We’ll help you understand where each part is located and what it does. When the installer comes to your home to give you a garage door replacement he will come with 8 key items that we will breakdown for you.

  1. garage door sections
  2. garage door strut brace
  3. garage door torsion tube
  4. garage door tracks
  5. garage door hardware box
  6. garage door springs
  7. garage door opener
  8. garage door opener rail

Garage door sections

The garage door panel sections are the main breakable parts of your garage door you see. These can come in any width and height for the size of hole that your house was built with. The outside looks come in many designs these days with many options of colors. your new garage door replacement will improve your curb appeal and in some cases save you on your energy bills.

Garage door strut brace

Garage door strut brace

Garage door struts stiffen sections of the door to prevent them from bending or breaking. Struts help make each section/panel rigid so the door will open and close smoothly. If the sections are not rigid, your garage door will bend as it opens and closes

For years, the wholesaler only gave out a strut brace on doors 12 foot or wider. We always recommend at least one on any size door to  be installed with more installed on request. The additional strut makes a huge difference in extending the door’s life, the opener, and the door parts. The door cycles are smoother and less noisy. All garage doors with an opener should have a strut across the top panel. Otherwise, the torque created by the J-Bar can eventually tear the top panel.

A torsion tube is the steel shaft that that runs the length of a garage door. It provides support and helps maintain tension on the springs. When the torsion tube breaks, it needs to be replaced quickly, or you may experience major issues with your door.

Garage door tracks

garage door tracks

Your garage door is the largest entryway to your home, but you wouldn’t be able to open it without the vertical track. They’re made up of two metal beams that run vertically on both sides of your garage door from the inside. The garage door rides the tracks as it opens.

This includes hinges, rollers, brackets, springs, cables, and other hardware required to attach and operate the garage door.

These kits are available in different configurations and sizes, depending on the type of garage door being installed or repaired. Some kits are designed for specific brands or models of garage doors, while others are universal and can be used with different types of doors.

Garage door springs

garage door spring

The torsion spring is found above the garage door, It creates the twisting motion known as torque. The torque of the torsion spring lift the door’s weight and is how you’re able to manually open your garage door when needed.

You need to make sure you get a torsion spring specifically for your garage doors weight.

If you don’t get the correct torsion spring or it isn’t installed properly, it can add stress to other parts of your garage door and the garage door opener. Make sure your torsion spring is installed by a professional.

Also, a poorly installed torsion spring can cause damage to your door and opener. When that happens, you’re in danger of sudden drops which can be incredibly unsafe.
